This week, we proudly join the international community in recognising Deafblind Awareness Week, and for the first time, July 27 has officially been declared International Day of Deafblindness by the United Nations.
Deafblindness is an umbrella term used to describe a combination of vision and hearing loss that significantly impacts communication, access, and participation. Usher syndrome is one of the most common genetic causes of deafblindness and affects many of the young people and families in our community.
At UsherKids Australia, we’ve been busy raising awareness of the unique support needs of individuals with deafblindness, from Parliament House to the streets with vibrant yarn bombing displays. Creative, community-driven initiatives like these help us open conversations, build understanding, and advocate for better systems of support.
Deafblindness may be rare, but with awareness, inclusion, and the right supports, individuals and families can thrive.
