This week, UsherKids Australia was delighted to take part in the University of Melbourne Doctor of Optometry Student Conference 2026, aptly titled “More Than Meets the Eye”.
Emily joined a panel alongside representatives from Guide Dogs Victoria, Vision Australia, Glaucoma Australia and The Fred Hollows Foundation, sharing the many different ways optometrists can use their skills and experience beyond traditional clinical practice and collaborate with not-for-profits.
Emily spoke about her own somewhat unexpected journey from being a parent seeking answers following her son’s diagnosis with Usher syndrome, to co-founding UsherKids Australia and working across advocacy, research, education and service development.
The discussion was a great opportunity to introduce future optometrists to the important role community and consumer organisations can play in improving outcomes and to encourage students to seek out opportunities to work alongside people with lived experience throughout their careers.
A big thank you to the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences and the student organisers for inviting UsherKids Australia to be part of the conversation.
